What are mica powders ?

Let’s talk mica! You could have heard about mica powder before as the mineral has been around forever. It’s a non-toxicity mineral which gives a shimmery and metallic such appearance. You can in fact locate mica powder in cosmetics, soaps and lotions as well as art supplies. So WHY if you look into using mica powders in your artwork? They basically leave a glow on whatever you use it on. Theyrsquo;re super flexible and may be used to get a couple of different projects. Enough said! Given that you’re already sold on mica powder (which we’re sure you're!) , allow ’s get into how you can use it in your art jobs.

1. Art diary

To get a great shimmery background for your artwork journal or scrapbook page, combine water and mica powder in a jar of spray. Spray it right on your paper. Have some fun! 🙂

2. Painting

You can combine mica powder right into oil paint, acrylic paint, or mediumship to give the painting depth.

3. Clay

There are two ways you can use mica powder with clay. You may either blend it with the raw clay to add color or you can brush the pigment on, sealing it with a finish. You may also brush mica powder onto metal and apply an end.

4. Glass

Mica powder may be used on glass you’ll first have to combine it with a clean burning glass adhesive (or Bullseye Glastac) and rubbing alcohol. Use 2 parts mica, 1 part Glastac, and one part rubbing alcohol to paint directly into your piece. Next you’ll need to put it in the kiln for about 1325° F.

5. Soap

We mentioned mica may be used in soap opera earlier but we thought we’d add it into the record of artwork jobs because it’s really cool what could be done with that.

We advocate using micas from the melt and pour method. All you have to do is add the powder to your melt. If you get any mica bubbles float up to the top, spray them with only a bit of rubbing alcohol. Once everything is blended, pour the soap into your mold.

For melt: Use ½ teaspoon per pound of melt

Note: Mica powder works best with translucent melts.
